** JR SHOOTER EARNS NRA SCHOLARSHIP **

Kayleen Bowie, a student at Dolores High School, was selected to participate in the National Rifle Association’s annual National Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.). Y.E.S. is a seven-day, expense paid educational experience in Washington, D.C. for outstanding rising high school juniors and seniors. While in the nation’s capital, Kayleen will learn the significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights while developing an understanding of the government and the importance of actively participating in it.

Kayleen was selected from numerous qualified applicants from across the country. She was required to complete an extensive application, which included the submission of transcripts, an essay about the Second Amendment, a personal statement and three personal recommendations.

Kayleen is involved numerous school activities including student government and also being the Treasurer of National Honor Society. She has lettered in academics in school for all three years of her being in high school, while being ranked in the top 8 of her class, and is on the volleyball team. She has also been an avid competitive shooter for the 4 Corners Rifle and Pistol Club for approximately 8 years, competing with .22 Rifle. Kayleen also competes at the National Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with .22 Rifle and Air Rifle, year round. She plans to attend college and complete her undergraduate education, followed by medical school with hopes of becoming a radiologist.

The National Rifle Association launched Y.E.S. in 1996 in an effort to encourage America’s youth to become active and knowledgeable citizens at both national and local levels. All funding for the program is provided by The NRA Foundation through monies raised by Friends of NRA. Friends of NRA is a grassroots, fundraising program organized by local volunteers. Since the program’s inception in 1993,Friends of NRA has funded thousands of local projects that include youth education efforts, firearm training, and wildlife conservation projects.
